Screening Meeting

All judges were invited to a screening committee meeting in September. The selection was conducted by a voting system of the judges, keeping in mind that the idea should be innovative and exciting and that it should be unprecedented. With such many entries we have received, it would be just a waste to select only a few awards we had prepared! That is why we decided to prepare a special award as well. Congratulations to all the winners!

The prizes will be sent out in due course, so please be patient. Please note that we may contact you when we deliver the prizes or realize your ideas.

  First of all, I was surprised by such a large number of entries. Among the entries, I was impressed by the many ideas that made us feel outdoors and in nature even though they were inside the house, such as ideas that let us move our bodies, grow trees, and water flowing through the house. I was also moved by the seriousness with which the selection committee members tried to find the fun in all the entries.

  Many of the entries put their heart and soul into making the most of the Machiya townhouse, and I noticed a lot of imagination in their works. All of the expressions of future living are thoughtful, paying respect to the Machiya that has stood there for a long time and seen the passage of time. Living is not a task but a life, and the improvement of QOL (Quality of Life) was full of possibilities that can be expressed in various ways in the Machiya.

  Thank you very much for the many submissions of ideas. Even though some ideas submitted for this year's contest were far from realistic renovations (some of them violated the Building Standard Law), we were so stimulated by the ideas that professional architects could not have come up with. In particular, we were impressed by the plans that included a garden, which is an essential part of a Kyomachiya, not only outside but also inside the house, as well as the use of vertical space. We would like to continue to solicit ideas for the future, so please stay in touch with us.

Most of the ideas were proposals for renovation plans, but this "Thermit" was a proposal for materials. While Kyomachiya is made of materials that enhance the wooden structure, I felt the newness and potential of aluminum, a modern material.
