Idea Contest 2024

Thank You for the Numerous Submissions

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted their ideas. This year, we received even more entries than before (131 submissions), and the entire team is both grateful and deeply inspired by your enthusiasm. In addition to the 3 main judging criteria - originality, excitement, and feasibility - we were also captivated by each proposal’s “potential impact on the local community”, “innovation through technical elements”, and “design quality”, which were all taken into consideration. Furthermore, if feasible, we plan to commercialize the award-winning ideas in the future; we hope you’ll look forward to updates on our website.

Screening Meeting

選考会

On a day in October, we gathered our esteemed judges at Hachise to hold the screening meeting. With so many impressive entries to review, the judges deliberated carefully and have finally chosen the winners. Congratulations to all the award recipients!

Prizes will be sent out gradually, so please allow us some time. We may reach out to you regarding prize delivery or the potential realization of your ideas.
※Please note that not all winning ideas will be implemented.

Comments from Judges

We were first struck by the sheer volume of entries, which was double that of the previous contest. Many submissions reflected themes of connection - with people, nature (such as greenery, sunlight, and water) - which aligns closely with the popular articles among our Bukkenfan website and reflects a current direction for homes in modern Japan. Numerous entries also focused on enjoying time in baths (or saunas), life with pets, and designs featuring curves, all indicating a strong desire for relaxation and comfort.

We enjoyed reviewing the many unique proposals. My personal judging criteria focused on different aspects for each award. For the Gold Prize, I considered feasibility since implementation was key, while for the Silver Prize and Hachise Special Award, I emphasized the originality of perspectives and the enjoyment of space. I found proposals that managed to enrich daily life and express “something extra” within a limited space especially compelling.

Thank you for the 131 submissions we received. Many ideas focused on similar concepts, which may be understandable given the limited planning options for compact, single-story houses. Common themes included Doma earthen floor designs - especially with planted greenery, loft bedrooms, and approaches to the garden. Among these, the Doma with greenery is a concept we had previously implemented in a property sold by Hachise. Although we were initially unsure if it would appeal to buyers, it successfully sold. We look forward to your participation in the next contest as well.

Judge’s comment (Bukkenfan):
There were several ideas focused on connecting with the town, but among them, the illustrations that provided a clear and vivid image were particularly striking. They made us feel that we would love to see the real thing.

Judge’s comment (Kohei Nishimura):
The Doma earthen floor space featuring a symbolic tree seems enjoyable, and it’s likely that many single residents would love to live in such an environment. We have a record of similar renovations in the past that were successfully sold, so this plan appears quite feasible.

Judge’s comment (Kohei Nishimura):
t's a plan that may not be practical, but it sounds fun. A community centered around books is intriguing. Creating a reading corner on the deck in the backyard would make it even more enjoyable.

Judge’s comment (Naoki Nishimura):
I felt a sense of creativity in the idea of creating a furniture-like small Machiya within a Machiya. The unique experience of feeling the Machiya's exterior through the earthen floor sounds exciting. Additionally, the functional significance given to the street-side earthen floor makes the house seem more endearing.

Judge’s comment (Naoki Nishimura):
Among the many unique ideas proposed for dividing rooms, this suggestion stands out because it utilizes curves for both architectural partitions and furniture, allowing for flexible movement. This aspect resembles the inherent flexibility of traditional machiya, making it both enjoyable and practical.
