Unlike standard machiya, which combines both business and living spaces, this type of machiya is used solely for dwelling and therefore lacks a storefront. Degōshi (bay windows with lattices on their exterior) in these machiya are often smaller than those found in standard machiya. The shimotaya-style machiya are rare in Kyoto.
