TENJO

Ceiling

Traditional Japanese ceilings have different design formats depending on the function and formal ranking of the room.

YAMATO CEILING

The second-story floorboards are supported by small beams. In Kyo-machiya, informal rooms, such as in the shop area and kitchen, often have this type of ceiling.

SAOBUCHI CEILING

This ceiling design consists of a flat wood ceiling supported by narrow wood beams. In Kyo-machiya, this type of ceiling can often be found in tatami rooms such as “oku-no-ma.”

GO CEILING

Considered to be the most formal ceiling design, narrow wooden beams form square patterns in the ceiling.

AJIRO CEILING

Woven bamboo ceilings made of shaved bamboo strips. In Kyo-machiya, this style is used particularly for tearooms and tatami rooms.
